How Does Radius Define Dome Layers?

Radius is the distance from the dome’s center axis to the outer surface in blocks. At the base (equator of the half-sphere), the footprint is the widest circle. Each layer above uses a smaller horizontal radius so the shell follows a sphere equation on a block grid.

Diameter at the base

With a center on a block, diameter is often about 2 × radius + 1. Radius 10 lands near a 21-block-wide base and climbs about 10 layers to a small top cap (tool grids show the exact cells).

Center mark first

Plant a permanent center marker under the apex. Every layer’s offset is measured from that X/Z. If the center drifts one block midway, the whole roof looks sheared from outside.

Should You Build a Hollow or Solid Dome?

Solid fills the volume. Hollow keeps a shell (usually one block thick in generators) so the interior is usable and the material cost drops dramatically.

When solid still wins

Tiny decorative half-orbs, pixel-art planets on a shelf, or cores you will never enter. For anything you walk inside, hollow is the default.

What Is the Difference Between a Dome and a Dome With Floor?

A standard dome is open at the base so the curved shell sits on whatever structure you already built. Dome + floor adds a solid circular base at the lowest layer — a ceiling cap between a tower room and the attic under the curve.

Build from the base ring upward so you always stand on finished work.
