How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator
Calculating your weighted grade takes just a few clicks:
Add assignments. Click 'Add Row' to create entries for each graded assignment, test, or project. Give each one a name for easy reference.
Enter grades and weights. For each assignment, enter the grade you received (as a percentage, e.g., 92) and the weight of that assignment (e.g., 20 for 20% of the final grade). The weight can be in percentage points or raw points — the calculator handles both.
View your results. Your weighted average updates in real time. The calculator shows your overall percentage, equivalent letter grade, and how much each assignment contributes to your final score.
Key features:
- Unlimited rows — add as many assignments as you need
- Real-time updates — results calculate as you type
- Letter grade conversion — automatic A+ through F mapping
- Weight visualization — see each assignment's contribution
How Weighted Averages Work
A weighted average gives some values more importance (weight) than others. The formula is:
Weighted Average = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)
For example, if you scored 95% on an assignment worth 40% of your grade and 80% on one worth 60%:
- (95 × 40) + (80 × 60) = 3800 + 4800 = 8600
- Total weight = 40 + 60 = 100
- Weighted average = 8600 ÷ 100 = 86%
Notice that the 60%-weighted assignment pulls the average closer to 80%, even though you scored higher on the other one. This is because it carries more weight in the final calculation.
This is different from a simple average, which would give (95 + 80) ÷ 2 = 87.5% — not accounting for the assignment weights at all.
Tips for Grade Planning
Use the calculator strategically to plan your semester:
- What-if scenarios: Enter hypothetical grades for upcoming assignments to see what score you need on the final exam to hit your target GPA.
- Focus on heavy weights: If 3 assignments are due but one is worth 30% while the others are 5% each, prioritize the 30% assignment — it has 6× more impact on your grade.
- Check your syllabus weights: Make sure your weights add up to 100%. If they don't, the calculator still works (it divides by total weight), but your weighted average might not match what your professor calculates.
- Track throughout the semester: Bookmark this page and update it after each graded assignment. This gives you a running real-time view of where you stand.
- Understand grade boundaries: An 89.5% might round to an A- with some professors. Knowing exactly where you stand helps you make decisions about how much effort to put into remaining assignments.
