HEX uses 6 hex digits (#FF5733) for red, green, blue channels (0-255 each). RGB is decimal (255, 87, 51). HSL uses hue (0-360°), saturation (0-100%), lightness (0-100%). CMYK is for print: cyan, magenta, yellow, key/black. Conversion formulas are exact between HEX and RGB; HSL requires trigonometric calculations.

Hex Color Converter — Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between HEX and RGB?+

They represent the same thing! HEX uses base-16 (FF = 255), RGB uses base-10. #FF0000 = rgb(255, 0, 0) = pure red. HEX is more compact for CSS.

Why is HSL more intuitive than RGB?+

HSL separates hue (color), saturation (vivid vs gray), and lightness (light vs dark). To make a color lighter, increase L. To make it pastel, decrease S. In RGB, you'd have to adjust all three channels.

When do I use CMYK vs RGB?+

RGB for screens (additive: light), CMYK for print (subtractive: ink). A bright RGB blue may look different printed in CMYK because printers can't reproduce all screen colors.
